Global reaction to Trump's Nazism/Fascism could help Lula in 2026.
"The rise of extremism and the Republican's belligerent policies are generating international resistance and could impact the Brazilian electoral landscape," Bepe points out.
"No one will build a beautiful place on the corpses of women and children," said President Lula, strongly condemning US President Donald Trump's plans to expel Palestinians from Gaza, steal their land, and build a "Riviera" there.
Lula echoed the sentiments of numerous political leaders, media outlets, and non-governmental organizations around the world, who also condemned such a totalitarian impulse.
Brazilian political analysts, however, saw Trump's rise to the presidency of the most powerful nation on Earth as a factor that could favor the native far-right against Lula in 2026, even to the point of preventing the re-election of the Brazilian president.
Is it?
First, let's be clear that the game is only just beginning. It's like a football match with only two minutes played. It's obvious that, bravado aside, there's a lot more heavy-handedness to come.
In just over two weeks in office, Trump has already offended the civilized world by closing US humanitarian agencies; confiscating databases on scientific and health research; withdrawing the US from the WHO, the Paris Agreement, and the UN Human Rights Council; threatening to seize Gaza and expel Palestinians in blatant ethnic cleansing; imposing tariffs on products from allied countries and China; forcibly deporting immigrants; promising to annex Greenland, violating Danish sovereignty; and promising to forcibly reclaim the Panama Canal.
In other times, these decrees and intentions would have been worthy of enthusiastic applause from Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, or Salazar. Today, the most notorious support among rulers comes from the president of Argentina, a known radical bootlicker of Trump.
The problem for Trump, in the medium and long term, is that honorable people and sovereign countries will not allow themselves to be crushed like flies. Even though the age of algorithms has produced a legion of imbeciles across five continents, and even though neoliberal individualism is responsible for the significant reduction in the level of social and political awareness, civil society and humanist, civilizing, and patriotic values still exist, which the majority of the world's population does not intend to relinquish.
It is predictable that the more crimes against humanity Trump commits, the greater the resistance from the people will be. And it starts at home. History is full of examples of US defeats in disputes and wars in which the mobilizations and protests of the Americans themselves played an important role. The Vietnam War is just one of those cases.
Furthermore, excessive economic protectionism, in the form of tariffs on imported products, can increase inflation in the US, harming the quality of life of Americans, who also stand to lose from the relentless march towards unprecedented international isolation of the country, which could be fatal for the American economy in times of globalization and multilateralism.
By 2026, when voters are called to the polls, they will have witnessed everything the far right is capable of in terms of destroying the most basic and fundamental rights, demonstrating that the four years of the Bolsonaro government were just a small sample of the horrors perpetrated by the adherents of this extremist ideology.
The alarm is therefore sounding loudly for those who simply want to live in peace.
