What kind of country is this, Bolsonaro's country?

Coronavirus cases are increasing in the country (Photo: Alan Santos - PR)

What kind of country is this, whose president publicly states that he sleeps with a firearm – a .40 caliber pistol, a revolver, or whatever – under his pillow because he trusts no one, not even the presidential guard responsible for securing the Alvorada Palace? What kind of country is this, in which the president repeatedly incites the population to support acts throughout the country demanding the closure of the National Congress and the Supreme Federal Court (STF)?

What kind of country is this, governed by a president considered sexist, homophobic, racist, who attacks women, the press, minorities, organized civil society, left-wing parties and other opponents, cultivating hatred as a political instrument to divide Brazil and exercise power in a progressively oppressive way? What kind of country is this, that has a president capable of traveling to the USA four times in just over a year and two months in office, without any real advantage being gained in the name of Brazil's true interests?

What kind of country is this that passively watches the news about the existence of a "hate cabinet," supposedly installed on the third floor – the same floor as the presidential office – of the Palácio do Planalto, the seat of the federal government, with the objective of producing and disseminating fake news? Operating under the coordination of Rio de Janeiro city councilman Carlos Bolsonaro (PSC), the "02," the "hate cabinet" would, a priori, be composed of three employees of the Presidency of the Republic: Tércio Arnaud Tomaz, José Matheus Sales Gomes, and Mateus Matos Diniz.

Instability and chaos

The trio, under investigation by the Joint Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPMI) on Fake News, established in the National Congress, is allegedly operating a gigantic counter-propaganda machine capable of destroying the reputations of anyone. Funded with a great deal of public money, the "hate cabinet" has been a significant factor in the very serious political crisis, artificially and incessantly fueled in this country, causing instability and worsening the chaotic socio-economic situation.

As the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), himself observed, there are no “resources and structure” comparable to what “the government's inner circle has to spread so much fake news as has been done in recent weeks.” As Felipe Boff, a journalism professor at the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos) in Rio Grande do Sul, recalled, in 2019, the President of the Republic attacked the press 116 times in posts on his social media, speeches, and interviews. “One attack every 3 days.”

What kind of country is this, mired in stagnation or even recession produced by the neoliberal economic policies of Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, who works resolutely in the interests of the financial market? Even if it means deepening social inequalities. What kind of country is this, where federal investments in science, technology, education, health, culture, infrastructure, social security, etc., are cut, suffocating all these sectors under the pretext of addressing the fiscal crisis? What kind of country is this?
