Fool's gold
An offense against cinema.
A 23-year-old prostitute and a 21-year-old Russian billionaire become sexually involved and decide to get married in Las Vegas after a week of sex and video games. His parents have the marriage annulled. The marriage is annulled. The young man returns to Russia and she returns to the brothel. The end.
We don't know who the prostitute is (where she came from, why she became a prostitute), who the young man is (except that he's addicted to video games), much less who his parents are (undefined oligarchs who come to rescue their son in their private jet).
The script is bland. The writing is garbage. There isn't a single intelligent, creative, or funny line, just thousands of "fuck you" and "motherfucker"s. The Armenian henchmen seem to have stepped out of Oscarito's 50s comedies.
And yet, the film won the Oscar in Hollywood and the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
It is not only a symptom of the decline of American cinema (an insult to Charles Chaplin, Orson Welles, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick, John Ford) but also of the decline of critics, the artistic class, producers and audiences who can no longer distinguish the wheat from the chaff.
An insult to cinema.
