January 8th, the day that “still” hasn’t ended.

Without a doubt, Bolsonarism planted its outrageous seed in the heart of a segment of the population that began to exude its hatred from every pore.

The term "coup" means punch, slap. We have been slapped for a long time; and we live under the aegis of coups. We are resilient, and we have already proven this through so many renowned uprisings: Canudos, the Manaus Commune, the Cabanagem, the Revolt of the Lash, and so many others, whether nativist or separatist.

On November 15, 1889, the Republic was proclaimed, which, in reality, belatedly served as a blow to the (prosperous?) Monarchy. The religious question was a relevant factor in bringing about the change. The military forces, with the exception of the Navy, were also interested in this situation. And the Abolition of Slavery was another milestone of this proclamation.

The discontented rural aristocracy (under positivist ideals) conspired with the armed forces to orchestrate Deodoro da Fonseca's coup. Overthrowing the Monarchy was a matter of time: everything was planned, including the mass generation of (already freed) slaves who were left barefoot and adrift, like beggars.

There is a historiographical version that claims the abolitionists, who truly aimed for the freedom of human beings enslaved for three hundred years, were monarchists. The coup of November 15th was necessary in relation to world interests. The crown was exchanged for a top hat, according to Gilberto Freire. This is because Emperor Pedro II had begun a process of negligence regarding imperial command...

A country not yet independent witnessed the birth of a toy republic with a sword in hand, and from there we went from coup to coup, until we arrived at 1964, a fateful year that transformed and revealed the people conceived here as "watched oppressed" within a piece of land soaked in torture and death. In truth, the coup plotters work against the people. Yes, the bourgeoisie, the elite, or whatever it may be called, obeys capital, in the spirit of "might makes right, and sense makes right."

There are clichés about the 1964 coup, and the military and the regime are also being abandoned, such as the idea that torture and censorship only occurred after 1968; the assumption that general officers were not responsible for torture and political assassination; the impression that the various instances of repression formed a homogeneous and articulated whole; the simplistic classification of the military as "hard" or "moderate," etc. Because of all this, one can speak of a new phase in the historical production about the period.

Therefore, what happened on January 08, 2023, may represent, for certain historians, what the right-wing press is currently classifying as "captivity," or whatever the term is used to describe it. only As an action by the Left, including with the participation of the government, let us rethink, readers, because this event that occurred on the aforementioned day on the Esplanade of the Three Powers in Brasília, may be the day that never ended...and without a doubt, it already enters the gallery of "punches" (or blows) against the reconquest of the democratic rule of law for every Brazilian citizen.

Without a doubt, Bolsonarism planted its outrageous seed in the heart of a segment of the population that began to spew its hatred through every pore of its right-wing and sectarian tendencies.
