Obama should return the Nobel Peace Prize.
"By expelling 35 Russian diplomats from American soil, under accusations of participating in cyberattacks aimed at provoking Hillary's defeat, Obama triggered the most serious diplomatic incident with Russia since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961, when the world was under threat of nuclear war," writes columnist Alex Solnik; "the last thing the world wanted was to end the year in this nuclear tension on the eve of the inauguration of the new American president, who is considered to be much more aggressive than the supposedly moderate Obama," he adds; wisely, Vladimir Putin said he would wait for Donald Trump's inauguration before making any decision.
By expelling 35 Russian diplomats from American soil on Thursday, October 29th, accusing them of participating in cyberattacks aimed at causing Hillary's defeat, Obama triggered the most serious diplomatic incident with Russia since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961, when the world was under threat of nuclear war.
Obama's extreme measure, accompanied by threats of new sanctions, some of which will be taken without announcement, as he said, meaning that the expulsion was only the beginning of what could be an escalation of retaliations, leaves Putin with no option but to respond in kind.
And his response will, in turn, provoke yet another from Obama.
And the last thing the world wanted was to end the year in this state of nuclear tension on the eve of the inauguration of the new American president, who is considered to be far more aggressive than the supposedly moderate Obama.
Obama created a huge problem for Trump even before taking office.
If he doesn't readmit the expelled Russians as soon as he takes office on January 20th, he will corroborate Obama's claim that they are spies who influenced the American elections and, therefore, acknowledge that his victory was not clean.
It would be a disaster for Trump; it could be a signal for the outbreak of a popular movement to annul the elections.
If, on the other hand, he invites the Russians to return, considering them thus wronged, he will be contradicting his countryman and siding with Putin, which could be interpreted by the Americans as treason.
Obama just ruined the New Year's celebrations, but that might be the least of his problems.
Returning the Nobel Peace Prize was the least he should have done.
