Valdemar's police problem is a big problem for the PL and the far right
“The new investigation will have an impact on the party and its parliamentary base, on the eve of the election,” writes Moisés Mendes
Valdemar Costa Neto has once again become a police case. The situation is so complicated that he will no longer be able to visit Bolsonaro. He visited the leader on Monday and intended to revisit him on the 29th.
Bolsonaro summoned him after being informed that Valdemar was once again being investigated for conspiring against the electoral system in 2022. When consulted, Alexandre de Moraes sent word that this was not the case. Valdemar will also once again be prevented from communicating with Bolsonaro and other defendants or those convicted as coup plotters.
Valdemar's police problem is treated with candor by the major newspapers, but it's a huge political problem for the PL party and the entire far right. Because Valdemar is Bolsonaro's voice in the back-and-forth and the central figure in the articulations for expanding the parliamentary base of Bolsonarism.
Valdemar is doing what Ciro Nogueira and Gilberto Kassab hesitate to do in the PP and PSD parties, acting as opportunistic extensions of the far right. The owner of the PL has already decided that his party should be openly pro-Bolsonaro, and no longer a gaseous, shapeless, and task-oriented right wing.
A party that not only embraces Bolsonarism, but behaves like a legitimate Bolsonarist. Valdemar decided that he himself will not be someone terribly Bolsonarist, but faithful to what Bolsonaro represents.
He and the entire PL are dedicated to building loyalty within their base, hoping not only to maintain it but also to expand it. This is because the PL only managed to elect 99 representatives in 2022, forming the largest bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, due to becoming Bolsonaro's party.
Valdemar wants to be a leader of Bolsonarism without Bolsonaro, not only in Congress, even without holding office, but everywhere. Bolsonarism with its feet on the ground will be carried forward by him and the PL party, and certainly not by Eduardo and his brothers.
Valdemar had told Bolsonaro: leave the problems to me. He told Eduardo to calm down, so as not to stress his father, and promised to do what matters: dedicate himself to winning votes for Congress.
Because Alexandre de Moraes and the first panel decided to restrain him, based on an elementary conclusion: if the owner of the Instituto Voto Legal, Carlos Rocha, was convicted of conspiring against the electoral system, Valdemar should be investigated again.
It was Valdemar who hired Rocha, who produced lies disseminated by Valdemar and his group in the PL in 2022. Rocha himself issued a statement defining himself as "the butler" convicted of the crime, while the mastermind, Valdemar, goes unpunished.
Valdemar falls into the hands of the Federal Police again, who already indicted him in 2024, but did not have the support of the Attorney General's Office, which decided not to prosecute him as a coup plotter. Now, things get complicated.
It will be investigated in the election year. Will he repeat, as he said in his testimony to the Supreme Court, as a witness for Rocha, that he didn't want to have spread the lies in the report against the ballot boxes, but was pressured by PL deputies?
He said he didn't even want to file the lawsuit with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) to question the ballot boxes and the election results. But he was forced to, which resulted in a fine of R$ 22,9 million for bad faith litigation.
Who forced him to spread lies and appeal to the TSE (Superior Electoral Court)? What is Bolsonaro's role in this pressure? Why did Bolsonaro call him back for another visit so soon after he had already been visited?
The Liberal Party (PL) and Bolsonaro's supporters didn't need this investigation at a time like this. The inquiry distracts Valdemar, his inner circle, and the figures who should be mobilized for 2026.
The new investigation is unsettling and points to one certainty. This time, Valdemar will not escape. If he escaped the first time, despite the work of the Federal Police, he will not escape now, because the Attorney General's Office will not be able to send him to a drawer again, as it did in February.
Valdemar, the reliable informant for the gossip columns of the major newspapers, the big mouth, the helpful one who warned Bolsonaro that he would shut Eduardo up, this guy is back to being a problem. It's unpleasant to be seen with Valdemar again.
But many influential people, who were close to him and his butler Carlos Rocha, need to visit him. Valdemar's big problem is everyone's problem.
