The country cannot be left at the mercy of Bolsonaro's trial balloons.

The only alternative to an authoritarian escalation and an even greater tragedy in the fight against the pandemic, impeachment is a historical necessity. This time, there is no shortage of crimes of responsibility, and Brazil cannot wait.

The Covid-19 pandemic has a strong competitor in Brazil, in terms of its destructive potential: Jair Bolsonaro.

Demonstrating cowardice and selfishness, the president wants to be the center of attention in a crisis that demands calm. He uses the same tactic as always: trying to manipulate the debate to hide his terrible administration.

The President of the Republic did not wake up willing to contribute with emergency measures to the crisis. He woke up willing to engage in political fighting, and in the worst possible way, attacking other branches of government and institutions, leaving the country in limbo on a Sunday.

All this so that on Monday, like a good psychopath, he could pose as a defender of the Constitution. But even in his most "democratic" pronouncement, there were two Freudian slips: 1- Like Louis XIV, the president shouted: "I am the Constitution," simply disregarding all other Brazilian men and women who are also represented by the Magna Carta. 2- He defended the freedom of protesters to demand the return of AI-5, that is, the freedom to end the freedom of those who do not share his opinion.

It's worth noting that AI-5 allowed for deaths, torture, disappearances, the revocation of mandates and political rights, and the end of habeas corpus for crimes that the military dictatorship considered political. Does the president see no problem with someone defending these ideas?

Bolsonaro wants to be the firefighter for the fires he himself starts. Meanwhile, many Brazilians are burning with fever in hospital beds that will become overcrowded, especially if the population listens to the president and relaxes social isolation measures.

Every Sunday, he reinforces the request for his removal from office that I filed and which was forwarded to the Attorney General's Office by Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Marco Aurélio Mello. The document accuses Bolsonaro of violating articles 268, 258, and 286 of the Brazilian Penal Code, and is the only one of its kind that is still being processed.

The president, who previously threatened public and collective health, is now doing all this while attacking the democratic regime. He already has a history of impeachable offenses and seems to be waiting for a move from Congress in that direction to bolster his most loyal voters into supporting an authoritarian escalation, which no one doubts anymore.

Especially at a time like this, we cannot afford to keep someone in the Presidency who dreams of total power and lacks the maturity to handle the seriousness that the moment demands.

The only alternative to the authoritarian escalation and an even greater tragedy in the fight against the pandemic, impeachment is a historical necessity. This time, there is no shortage of crimes of responsibility, and Brazil cannot wait.
