The Sacco and Vanzetti case: the persecuted of the past and those of the present.
'Ruling classes do not hesitate to resort to all their firepower to keep those they exploit divided,' writes columnist Jair de Souza.
At a time when racial and social intolerance appears to be returning to the United States in all its fury and horror, it is advisable to go back in history by about a century to re-examine the Sacco and Vanzetti case.
As is well known to those who study the evolution of social movements, the search for scapegoats is a perennial concern for almost all those who undertake the political defense of capitalist interests in societies convulsed by class struggle.
With this objective in mind, the spokespeople for the ruling classes do not hesitate to use all the firepower at their disposal to keep those they exploit divided. Therefore, there is a constant attempt to incite hatred from certain sectors of workers against others who are even more vulnerable.
In this process, in the United States and other capitalist societies, immigrant workers are often the primary victims of discrimination and persecution, through which the ruling classes aim to maintain their privileged conditions unscathed.
As we can see when reviewing the case of Italian immigrants Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti in the United States at the beginning of the last century, the targets of the attacks were mainly workers from Italy. Thus, all the repressive force wielded by the powerful was employed to disable, destroy, and eliminate any attempts at resistance by the exploited.
In our time, in that same North American country, we can observe that those who play the role of Sacco and Vanzetti are no longer significantly immigrants of Italian origin. Currently, the scapegoats are mostly people from Latin American countries seeking a somewhat more dignified life and willing to work hard to achieve their goal.
However, we can see that the tricks and subterfuges used to crush the resistance of the subjugated classes remain almost the same as before. We will be able to verify how both the judicial apparatus and the police repression system continue to perform the functions they performed back then.
Therefore, I strongly recommend that you watch this excellent 1971 film very carefully, as it portrays this story. I have included Portuguese subtitles so that more people can access it. I hope this has been useful for the popular struggle.
