Brazil should bury the OAS once and for all, before it becomes its next victim.
After 1948, the OAS provoked coups and interventions in the Latin American region.
By Eduardo Vasco - Finally, Luis Almagro's reign as head of the Organization of American States has come to an end, after ten years of leadership in destabilizing, intervening in, and supporting coups d'état in several Latin American countries – obviously at the behest of Washington.
In his place, the Foreign Minister of Suriname, Albert Ramdin, was elected. This election was a sign that even governments with ties to the United States are bothered by the harmful role of the OAS. The Paraguayan candidate, whose government is one of the most subservient to the Americans, had to withdraw his candidacy upon realizing he would lose badly. Ramdin was elected unanimously, and Javier Milei could only grumble, accusing Suriname of being too close to China.
The Brazilian government played an important role in this election. Statements from the Secretary-General of Itamaraty suggest that the Lula administration worked to ensure the selection of the Surinamese candidate, supposedly more neutral. “The OAS has lost legitimacy and relevance on certain issues,” criticized Maria Laura da Rocha, due to the “logic of exclusion, stigmatization, and isolation of those who think differently.”
The ambassador was referring, in particular, to the organization's actions against Venezuela and Nicaragua because their respective governments did not submit to the plundering policies of American imperialism. Almagro fulfilled his role at the head of the OAS almost perfectly. Faced with the imperialist need to expand the exploitation of our countries due to the economic crisis that began in 2008, the OAS removed its mask and resumed the hard line that characterized it in the first decades after its founding.
After 1948, she made it possible the US coup against the Guatemalan government in 1954, banned Cuba for carrying out a popular revolution and supporting the military dictatorships of the continent and even the British invasion of the FalklandsIn the words of Maria Laura da Rocha, with Almagro the OAS was once again "wrapped in a Manicheanism reminiscent of the Cold War, but with new clothes." She also denounced the criminal sanctions imposed by the US against
Venezuela and Nicaragua, supported by the OAS, are truly responsible for the economic and social crisis in those countries. "The defense of democracy," he added, "has often been the object of political selectivity."
But anyone who thinks that the new OAS Secretary General will transform it into a democratic platform is mistaken. The OAS headquarters itself, where its employees work, is less than a kilometer from the White House and 60% of its budget is paid by the US. (100%, in some agencies). It is the true "ministry of the US colonies," as Fidel Castro famously called it. A change of minister will not make an agency of this nature modify the essence of its operation.
Although still very busy with internal turmoil and a war to deal with in Eastern Europe, the Trump administration has no intention of turning a blind eye to Latin America. Marco Rubio is an indication of this. An extremely dangerous indication. The threats against Panama and Mexico are too. Both the traditional right (which presents itself as "center" and "democratic") and the far-right are already taking advantage of this favorable scenario.
The Brazilian press endorses the OAS's criticism of Supreme Court Justice Dias Toffoli for overturning the Lava Jato operation's farces against Odebrecht and former PT minister Antônio Palocci. US-funded NGOs, such as Transparency International – which participated in the scandalous Lava Jato schemes – join the chorus. On the other side of the same political spectrum, Bolsonaro reveals he is a Trump informant. and publicly calls for imperialist intervention in Brazil: “They [the US government] are concerned about Brazil, they don’t want Brazil to become a new Venezuela, and we know that Brazil’s problem won’t be solved internally, it has to be solved with outside support.” His son went to the US thinking exactly about that.
The banks are waging an open campaign of destabilization against the Lula government. The press is already declaring the need for a "centrist" candidate, who could only defeat the current president in 2026 with the support of Bolsonaro's supporters. But even that wouldn't guarantee victory – not even the manipulated opinion polls have the audacity to show Lula as defeated.
The OAS could play a key role in challenging a possible Lula victory, as it did in 2019 against Evo Morales. There, it manipulated a report to promote a coup d'état. accusing the then-president was accused of rigging the elections.
Later The OAS was exposed by a study From the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, which analyzed its audit of the Bolivian election and concluded that the OAS's conduct was "dishonest, biased, and unprofessional." The authors stated that the OAS's actions profoundly affected the institution's credibility in overseeing elections held on the continent (actions that had already been irregular in the 2010 elections in Haiti, harming the party of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who had already been overthrown by US-sponsored coups in 1991 and 2004). Another analysis, by MIT researchersA study, also published in 2020, corroborated the conclusions that the OAS manipulated the report, which served as the basis for the opposition to stage a coup against Morales.
Even for the sake of survival, Brazil should abandon the OAS, as the truly sovereign governments of our continent have already done. We have CELAC, a legitimate organization for integration among our peoples, without the interference of the United States or Canada. We have ALBA. The OAS cannot be reformed. It must be repudiated and replaced. Unless we wish to continue being a colony of the United States, of Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
