No one will confuse Chico Buarque with Olavo de Carvalho.

"It's true that Bolsonaro supporters have appropriated the color yellow, but even they, if they listen to the song, won't think it's an ode to their idol or to the dictatorship," says Alex Solnik.

Singer Chico Buarque

After telling Renato Terra, in the series "The Free Song of Nara Leão," that she will no longer sing "With Sugar, With Affection," Chico Buarque declared to Regina Zappa, here on Brasil 247, which “By the tables” also entered its own particular index.

Of course, he, the creator of two of the most beautiful songs in his vast repertoire (400 works), has every right to sing or not sing whatever he wants. He is one of the immortals of Brazilian music.

In the case of the samba that tells the story of a more glamorous Amelia, composed at Nara's own request, Chico argues that he doesn't want a fight with feminists or that "feminists are right".

So far, so good. The less drama, the better. Especially after a certain age.

In the case of "Pelas tabelas" (By the Tables), he argues that the lyrics are dated: it doesn't sound right, in 2022, to talk about "chasing after a brunette/ in a yellow shirt/ banging pots and pans".

In 1984, yellow was the color of democracy. Today, it is the color of dictatorship.

It's true that Bolsonaro supporters appropriated the color yellow, and they didn't have, and still don't have, democratic objectives, but even they, if they listen to the song, won't think it's an ode to their idol or to the dictatorship.

Those who know and like Chico Buarque, even less so.

There is therefore no reason to relegate her to oblivion.

No one will confuse Chico Buarque with Olavo de Carvalho.
