Anyone who has paid any attention to the political evolution of Brazil over the last three decades knows what Bolsonaro meant until shortly before his election as President of the nation.

After being virtually expelled from the Army for misconduct, Bolsonaro spent almost 30 years engaged in parliamentary activities, first as a city councilman, then as a congressman. Yes, almost three decades of parliamentary work! And what were the fruits of his labor during all those years?

If the criterion to be used is the defense of the militia organizations that control organized crime in various regions of Rio de Janeiro, we are obliged to admit that his work was quite fruitful: Bolsonaro spared no effort to glorify the activities of the Rio de Janeiro militias, even going so far as to propose and approve in the Chamber of Deputies the granting of honorary mentions to the best-known militia leaders in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

On the other hand, if the evaluation criterion is measures or proposals taken to benefit the popular majorities, the panorama presents itself in a completely different way. During his more than 28 years in office, Bolsonaro never, not even once, has submitted anything that could be considered to be in the popular interest. To repeat, *not even once*.

And how can his re-election for so many parliamentary terms be justified without ever having done anything good for the majority of the population? The answer is not difficult to find. Although he has done nothing for the people, he has done a great deal for the benefit of militia organizations. And these organizations hold very strong economic and social control over vast regions of the periphery of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and adjacent areas.

If, in the past, mentioning "vote-buying" used to conjure images of powerful landowners operating in the backlands of northeastern Brazil, nowadays this is a much more typical characteristic of areas controlled by Rio de Janeiro's militias. Therefore, being the militias' preferred candidate is almost a guarantee of obtaining a seat as a city councilor or state representative. In other words, that explains everything.

Regarding Bolsonaro's election to the presidency, we already know the nefarious role played by corporate media outlets (Globo network in the lead), the dirty work done in tandem with these media outlets by Judge Sérgio Moro and the Lava Jato task force, as well as the financing of a very broad network for spreading lies and defamation by various unscrupulous businessmen.

It was the combined and orchestrated action of all these elements that gave rise to a feeling of enormous revulsion towards politics as a whole, which, ironically, ended up resulting in the election of the most nefarious of all politicians in the country. In their eagerness to prevent yet another victory for the PT (Workers' Party), they accepted consecrating as non-politician the one who embodied everything that was worst in the practice of politics. In other words, large segments of our people were induced to take poison as a way to combat a headache.

But how could Bolsonaro's figure have been accepted by all these groups that consider themselves the nation's elite? Surely, everyone involved in this scheme was fully aware that Bolsonaro was what Bolsonaro always was. No one in this group can claim to have been deceived. In fact, the passport that allowed Bolsonaro to cross borders and be accepted by the elites as their candidate was his adherence to the economic proposals most cherished by those who control most of the country's wealth. To leave no doubt, what made him a trusted candidate of the ruling class was his willingness and determination to fully implement the economic program of these elites: the unwavering application of the neoliberal program.

It wasn't simply a matter of his complete ignorance of everything related to economics that led Bolsonaro to choose the well-known spokesperson for bankers, Paulo Guedes, to lead his government's economic project. If his adherence to neoliberalism was the passport for crossing borders with financial oligarchies, the appointment of Paulo Guedes as his economic advisor served as the stamp of entry into this world of the privileged.

With Paulo Guedes, they have the guarantee that public assets will be dismantled and handed over to private groups from abroad and from Brazil; with Paulo Guedes, they know they can count on the government's commitment to eliminating labor rights; with Paulo Guedes, they trust that everything will be done to end the SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system); with Paulo Guedes, they believe that public education will become a business.

Therefore, when we see so many people across Brazil terrified by the blunders caused by Bolsonaro, this is not due to the inherent importance (for good or for bad) of this individual. Although we know that Bolsonaro personally is nothing more than an ignorant, uncultured, and mediocre politician, we also know that those behind him are the forces of big capital, those who live off rent-seeking and the exploitation of the nation and who do not wish to relinquish their privileges.

Therefore, when we shout *out BolsonaroWhat we really want to shout is...Out with the exploiters of the Brazilian people!*, *Out with Paulo Guedes and his surrender and hunger policy*, *Out with neoliberalism. What truly harms the people is not Bolsonaro's lack of manners, his foul mouth, or his lack of culture. What really hurts the majority of Brazilians is Bolsonaro's dedication to serving the interests of large financial capitalists and representatives of foreign capital at the expense of the nation as a whole.
