Lula admits he's open to running for vice president for the MDB in 2026.
MDB holds three ministries and could nominate a vice-presidential candidate if Alckmin runs for governor of São Paulo in 2026.
President Lula admitted to MDB leaders in a conversation this Wednesday that he may nominate a party member for the vice-presidential position in 2026. The party is part of the government's base in Congress and holds three ministries in the Esplanade of Ministries. According to sources, one of the conditions for this would be for the current vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, to run for governor of São Paulo.
Given this, Lula would have several options on the table. One of them would be to nominate the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, to be on the presidential ticket. Currently, Renan is being considered for the governorship of Alagoas. Another possibility would be to have Senator and former Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) in the position. In this case, Pacheco would need to leave the PSD and join the MDB—a condition that, according to sources, has already been discussed behind the scenes.
