Ineligibility is the minimum he deserves; Bolsonaro has to go to jail.
Given the range of crimes Jair Bolsonaro has committed, the Judiciary cannot, under any circumstances, shy away from wielding the full force of justice against him.
Judges from higher courts consider the possibility of Jair Bolsonaro being convicted and imprisoned in the next four years to be practically impossible. The most likely outcome, according to journalist Mônica Bergamo, is that he will be declared ineligible to run for office. This is an outrage. Bolsonaro faces 16 lawsuits in the TSE, which could lead to his ineligibility. In the criminal sphere, the former president could be imprisoned by a first-instance judge, where, now without privileged jurisdiction, he faces eight investigations.
Jair Bolsonaro cannot enjoy freedom and civil guarantees after all the crimes he committed in Brazil, especially while he was President of the Republic. Bolsonaro needs to be arrested and go to jail to serve a final and unappealable court sentence. Anything less than that is unacceptable.
Bolsonaro was ultimately responsible, the leader of the worst national response to the Covid-19 pandemic, whose deaths of at least 400 Brazilians could have been avoided. We cannot forget or minimize the deaths from the pandemic and Bolsonaro's responsibility in them. Just as it is unacceptable that the genocide committed against the Yanomami people goes unpunished. Bolsonaro and his aides cut off access to drinking water, food, and vaccines for the indigenous people. They encouraged the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and the expansion of illegal mining on indigenous lands. Rivers are contaminated with mercury; indigenous people are infected or have died from malnutrition, pneumonia, armed violence, and sexual violence. In 523 years of occupation of Brazilian lands, Bolsonaro was the most lethal agent for the Yanomami people.
Bolsonaro needs to be arrested for attacking the institutions of the Republic, for discrediting the electoral system and the electronic voting machines. For constantly threatening a coup d'état in the country and for effectively encouraging the terrorist acts of January 8th in the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square). Obviously, there is military involvement in this coup plot, and they too should receive the full punishment of the law, as promised by the president of the Supreme Federal Court, Rosa Weber, at the beginning of the judicial year.
Jair Bolsonaro needs to pay with imprisonment for the corruption and embezzlement committed with the presidential credit card. For his wasteful behavior, for spending millions of reais on luxury items, while 33 million people are going hungry.
If Bolsonaro is not convicted through due process and is not imprisoned, given the wide range of crimes he has committed, the ground will be prepared for new fascists and genocidal figures to be born and grow in Brazil. No amnesty for Bolsonaro. Ineligibility is the minimum; Bolsonaro needs to be imprisoned.
