Hypocrisy and negligence - Petrópolis cries!
It is in the nature of Capitalism to lead the overcrowding of urban areas, as is happening with the first district of the affected city.
The images of the Imperial city (Petrópolis) that frequently arrive through groups and are highlighted on social media clearly show the social tragedy that has shaken the mountain municipality. The destruction was widespread. However, all forms of lament fall solely on the shoulders of the natural phenomenon of summer rains.
There are rivers crisscrossing the city where the empire made its home and reigned in a slave-owning monarchy. God? Natural phenomenon? We question what caused such a catastrophe yesterday here in Petrópolis...
But what the statistics really show us is that there are more than 50.000 people residing in at-risk areas. Nature, in its course, doesn't pretend to understand that there are people ahead of it; it follows a destiny within biogeochemical cycles; and the water cycle is easy to understand with its stages: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and rain, and this has been occurring for billions of years, post-atmosphere.
The population of Petrópolis is 307 inhabitants distributed across 5 districts: Petrópolis, Cascatinha, Itaipava, Pedro do Rio, and Posse. Is the population density balanced? No. Let's look at the following excerpt: First District of Petrópolis: Petrópolis - This district concentrates the majority of the city's population. It is also a district that concentrates most of the city's commerce. Its division into neighborhoods is quite dense, as most neighborhoods are located in the first district, including the city center, where the city hall, the main buildings, old buildings, large schools, beautiful avenues, a large demographic concentration in various buildings, whether commercial or residential, and especially the museums, most of which are in this district, are located.
The first district is divided into dozens of neighborhoods, but the main ones are:
CENTER - VALPARAÍSO - BINGEN - QUITANDINHA - MORIN - ALTO DA SERRA - ALTO INDEPENDÊNCIA - CASTELÂNEA - SIMÉRIA - RETIRO - MOSELA - SÃO SEBASTIÃO - VILA MANZINI - MOINHO PRETO - DUARTE DA SILVEIRA - FAZENDA INGLESA - ROCIO - BATAILLARD - JOÃO XAVIER - 24 DE MAIO - DUAS PONTES - PONTE FONES.
It is typical of Capitalism to spearhead, among other liberal demands: the overcrowding of urban areas, as is the case with the first district of the affected city, which is indeed "very well planned" by the puppets of neoliberalism, whose "cold and calculating" goal is to obtain profit, and obviously this is achieved by employing strategies full of false meritocracies that are engineered within the unsuspecting minds of a population entangled for years in a colonial way of life.
Survival is the motto for those who parachute into a world managed by an unequal and combined system, and the chances of human success in this inhumane undertaking are almost nil.
Imagine how much uncontrolled growth, concentrating more people in a smaller area, can generate negative environmental impacts, such as what we saw yesterday (especially) in the historic center of Petrópolis, located in this first district, which is actually the showcase of the so-called Imperial city. We clearly need to use the Pythagorean theorem to design our urban architecture with more humanity and equity.
