FT: Bolsonaro, the Captain Corona of Brazil
Columnist Tereza Cruvinel states that "Bolsonaro has relapsed into denialism regarding the pandemic, sharing a video (...) demonizing protective measures against the coronavirus."
On Monday afternoon, Bolsonaro reiterated his denial of the pandemic, sharing a video, attributed to journalist Guilherme Fiúza, demonizing protective measures against the coronavirus.
The narration claims that campaigns like "Stay home" and "Wear a mask, respect life" encourage "moral condemnation" and compares the defense of masks to the practices of the Islamic group Taliban. "The Taliban is like that, the dumber the simplification, the better." The recommendation to wear a mask, however, is neither dumb nor simplistic. It is based on proven scientific evidence of its effectiveness in blocking virus-carrying droplets.
The text also labels those who demand compliance with preventive measures as the "Taliban of the pandemic."
In terms of nicknames, Bolsonaro also gained another one this weekend, from the British newspaper Financial Times, which called him Captain Corona, in a text accompanying the cartoon below: "Bolsonaro, Brazil's Captain Corona, bets on denying the virus."
