Freixo shed light on the situation: giants or pygmies?
"Freixo's grand gesture shed light on the tragic defeat that looms. The least that the parties of the progressive camp should do is suspend all candidacies in the capital cities. Tomorrow. And schedule a meeting. Immediately," notes columnist Ricardo Cappelli.
The reaction of several actors from the progressive camp to the courageous decision of Congressman Marcelo Freixo was curious.
Many of those who praised the attitude had their faces flushed with embarrassment. Others preferred to pretend they didn't see. Faced with grand decisions, the small becomes insignificant.
Are we facing a fascist threat? Is the democratic rule of law truly under threat? Does the president aspire to totalitarian power? Isn't that what we write about every day?
If the concern is genuine, what are the effective consequences? Does this very serious diagnosis change nothing? Are we heading towards an election like the one in 2016? Are party projects above the interests of the nation? Will it be every man for himself?
Is this really the “great example” that the leaders of progressive parties are going to give to the unemployed, the excluded, and those threatened by arbitrary rule? Are these the “altruists” who put the interests of the people above their own self-interest?
Honestly, excuse my outburst, but one needs to have a minimum of shame and responsibility.
History is screaming. The people mourn their dead every day. Hunger is beginning to knock on the doors of Brazilians. Business owners are watching their businesses fail. A sea of drama and uncertainty is engulfing the country.
Fascism is marching on relentlessly amidst the greatest crisis in our history. It is treason for anyone who calls themselves progressive to put petty squabbles or personal interests above the nation.
In a scenario like this, does it make sense, for God's sake, to have four or five candidates in Rio with absolutely no chance of winning? It's downright shameful. Don't they want to defeat Bolsonaro? Or is this just rhetoric for naive supporters?
Does it make sense for São Paulo, the country's main city, to have a festival of "position-marking candidates"? Does it make sense for the same thing to happen in other capitals of the country?
Freixo's grand gesture shed light on the tragic defeat that looms. The least that the parties of the progressive camp should do is suspend all candidacies in the capital cities. Tomorrow. And call a meeting. Immediately.
Why? To decide how to defeat the genocidal leader in each state capital. How? Can the unity candidate be from the left? Yes. Can they not be? That's also possible.
Progressives must set this example out of respect for the suffering of families left to fend for themselves. Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin, with their opposing worldviews, united to defeat Hitler. Is this pointless squabble going to prevail here? What is this all about?
Do this in the name of the Brazilian people. Do this in the name of the country. Do this while democracy still exists.
Giants or pygmies? History will tell.
