We need to listen to the PT activists in São Paulo.
We won with Lula and Haddad in 2022, indicating that we can win again in 2024.
Lula's victory over Bolsonaro was the result of a collective effort from various political fronts, which united to defend democracy against the coup attempts of Bolsonaro's supporters. Led by the PT (Workers' Party), this process was marked by extensive dialogue aimed at building a solid, pluralistic project with electoral appeal.
Now that the elections are over, it is the task of every PT (Workers' Party) activist, especially party leaders, to guarantee President Lula's governability so that he can implement the actions presented to the electorate. And guaranteeing this governability will be achieved through strengthening the PT for the 2024 electoral process. This strengthening is done through a strong unity built on democratic debate, as is our tradition.
In my understanding, it is essential to initiate a broad debate with activists in the municipalities to discuss the following premises:
- The PT (Workers' Party) launching or supporting candidates who support the Lula government;
- To build a broad arc of alliances in municipalities to weaken and defeat Bolsonaro's movement;
- To develop popular and democratic government programs, seeking broad social participation;
- Strengthen the PT (Workers' Party) in municipalities by expanding our representation of city council members.
As always, the city of São Paulo will be the showcase for this contest, and the PT's Municipal Directorate will be a protagonist in this electoral process. To that end, its members must be heard and taken into account when building a project for the 2024 elections, without rushing or authoritarianism, respecting party structures and the membership, which is our greatest asset and never wavers in good times or bad.
By prematurely launching Guilherme Boulos' (PSOL) pre-candidacy for mayor of São Paulo, we are bypassing a historical process of debate aimed at developing the best electoral strategy and strengthening the PT as a whole. If this pre-candidacy strengthens our party project, I will agree. However, so far, this does not seem to be the case for many party activists and leaders in the municipality.
The prohibition of this debate is a mistake because it fails to leverage the PT's political and electoral capital in the city. We won with Lula and Haddad in 2022, indicating that we can also win in 2024. And directing this mass of votes towards a PSOL candidate could drastically impact the party's representation in the City Council, resulting in its shrinking.
We know how important a majoritarian candidacy is for the election of city councilors. And the electoral advertising broadcast in the city of São Paulo is transmitted throughout the metropolitan region of the capital, with a real impact on the party's electoral performance in other cities.
We also cannot ignore the fact that PSOL has its own agenda, including being in opposition to the government of Fernando Haddad (2013-2016), and that this will possibly conflict with Lula's government, as for example in the election for the presidency of the Federal Chamber, in which PSOL members launched their own candidate.
It's not about supporting or not supporting Boulos, but rather about having an electoral strategy that defeats the fascists, truly defends our government, implements a bold program in the city, and strengthens our PT (Workers' Party). If he represents that, we'll be in, but debating this is fundamental.
