And the dwarf grew gigantic.
A week after mocking Brazil, Israel achieved a feat: complete isolation.
Rarely has a foreign policy decision proven as correct, effective, and timely as the one taken by Itamaraty (Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs) at the beginning of the military offensive in Gaza. By recalling the Brazilian ambassador in Tel Aviv for consultations, Brazil demonstrated courage and, in the eyes of the world, gained an undeniable moral superiority in the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
Classified as a "moral dwarf" by the spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, who even mocked the 7-1 defeat suffered against Germany, in a provocation that resonated among the spokespeople of national inferiority complex, Brazil anticipated events and delivered a historic thrashing to the regime of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
One need only look at what happened in the days following Brazil's position, which was promptly followed by the other Mercosur countries. Appalled by the brutality of a bombing at a United Nations school, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon blamed Israel and said that "nothing is as shameful as killing sleeping children."
Also emphatic, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said that Israel's "war crimes" must be prosecuted and punished.
The most striking scene of the week, however, was that of another UN representative, spokesperson Christopher Gunness, who, powerless in the face of so much violence and injustice, broke down in tears before the cameras. "We are not heartless bureaucrats."
Such was the wave of international outrage that even the United States, which had made Israel its military base aimed at the oil of the Middle East, was forced to back down.
President Barack Obama, who is supplying Israel with weapons and is therefore complicit in barbarity, called the school attack "unacceptable" and "shameful." While hypocritical, this was still a step forward for an imperialist country that has become a hostage of its small protectorate.
Result: the world, as a whole, followed the position of the "dwarf" Brazil, which grew gigantic. And the brutal regime of Israel achieved an unprecedented feat: the absolute isolation of a government that, according to the UN, shames not only its people, but humanity as a whole.
