In a country with a regrettable tradition of coups, initiated by Deodoro's sword on November 15, 1889, in a nation marked by the resentment of slave owners over the Abolition announced a year earlier, Jair Bolsonaro's argument to evade his responsibilities for January 8, 2023, is a typical case of a ready-made joke.
Since it was impossible to deny his presence -- in a leadership role -- in the coup plot, the defense hid behind the improvised juggling act that Fux had displayed in his vote to try to sway the Supreme Court.
In a country exhausted by a regrettable tradition of impunity granted to opponents of democracy throughout our republican history, the trial ended in a resounding defeat for the coup plotters.
The vote was 4 to 1 in favor of convicting Bolsonaro, a result that prevents appeals for review, an extreme recourse within our legal rights, but which are not permitted after a decision with such emphatic numbers.
With this decision, Jair Bolsonaro entered history as the first coup leader arrested and convicted. In a country that, for the first time, demonstrated a level of democratic maturity never before seen in its history, the Bolsonaro fiasco reveals itself as a powerful argument against possible future coup nightmares.
