The coup-plotting CPMI is the new January 8th.
"The versions that Bolsonaro's supporters want to exploit simply disregard logic, common sense, and people's intelligence," says Eduardo Guimarães.
To begin with, the infamous Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the attempted coup and Bolsonaro-supporting move carried out on January 8th of this year is nothing more and nothing less than an extension of that same coup attempt.
To explain further: ultimately, Bolsonaro's supporters dream of building a rallying cry analogous to the fiscal maneuvers attributed to Dilma Rousseff, which ultimately led to her impeachment.
The versions that Bolsonaro's supporters want to exploit simply disregard logic, common sense, and people's intelligence. There are two particularly strong versions that the coup plotters plan to exploit, among the various absurdities circulating:
1a) - The Lula government "dragged its feet" in the face of attacks on the Presidential Palaces. According to the theory, it allowed the coup plotters to advance without even facing opposition from the police and the Army.
2a) The Lula government dressed PT members in green and yellow and ordered them to attack the Palaces. Simple as that.
It's almost ridiculous to explain why these theories wouldn't last a fraction of a second in a serious investigation, since there are names, ID numbers, social media posts, videos, identified financiers, and much more that shows they were all hardcore Bolsonaro supporters.
A former Bolsonaro-supporting congressman criticized one of the most outlandish theories of the coup plotters: that Lula was in the Presidential Palace at the time of the invasion. This alone shows how delusional they are, since there is a wealth of evidence that the president was in Araraquara, in the interior of São Paulo state, on the day of the events.
So why did Bolsonaro supporters go to such lengths to establish the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on January 8th? Because they see it as a chance to sow doubt about their own guilt in the same minds of those who were dumbed down and voted for Bolsonaro in last year's election.
The effect of the farce, however, would not be merely political. Note that, against Dilma, they invented some nonsense and she was easily overthrown because the right wing has always been very strong in the legislature. So, if it sticks, it sticks. And coups continue in Brazil.
The problem is that the absurd scale of the arguments they are trying to raise is being seen – even by the authorities of the Brazilian Justice System – as yet another coup attempt. Or an attempt to undermine democracy by validating an abject and criminal farce.
Because of this, the Supreme Court and the Superior Electoral Court have already accelerated proceedings against Bolsonaro himself. His ineligibility will be declared in a few days, and his connection to the events of January 8th has already been solidified through his inclusion in the investigation into the attempted coup.
Bolsonaro and Anderson Torres already have a guaranteed spot as witnesses for the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI), should it actually take place. Anderson Torres, who refused an offer from the opposition to portray him as a victim with prison visits and the promotion of the theory that he is a victim of the "evil" Supreme Federal Court (STF). After all, he doesn't want trouble with those who could greatly prolong his ordeal.
It is for no other reason that a report in Correio Braziliense this Monday (24) reveals that the opposition is already wanting to give up on the CPMI that it has advocated until it could no longer do so. Simply because the shot looks and smells like it is going to backfire.
Note that while Lula spent 580 days with his head held high in prison, Torres cries, kicks and screams, and loses 12 kilos after a meager 100 days. This is why Lula is governing the country for the third time.
