Making Congress a body to review judicial decisions is yet another attack on democracy.

A stronghold of the people, parliament, and the judiciary is preparing to contain yet another attack against the democratic regime.

For the Chamber of Deputies, with the most impoverished composition in our history, basic constitutional principles such as the separation and autonomy of the powers of the Republic simply do not exist.

It would be almost comical if it weren't tragic to watch the deputies schedule yet another blatantly illegal and unconstitutional proposal, such as reducing the sentences of coup plotters. Imagine if this becomes the norm and the National Congress starts functioning as a kind of review chamber for the decisions of the Judiciary?

This comes after the deputies were demoralized by the Senate with the shelving of the "PEC da Bandidagem" (Amendment to the Constitution regarding banditry), a decision made decisively by the large popular mobilization fueled by high levels of civic indignation.

People felt offended to see parliamentarians elected by the people placing themselves above the law, granting themselves a kind of safe conduct to commit crimes.

Now, with new actors in the center of the ring, the depressing spectacle repeats itself. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a photo circulated a few days ago bringing together the new protagonists of the so-called Dosimetry Amendment, which speaks for itself.

There were Congressman Paulinho da Força, whose activities in the Chamber of Deputies remain a mystery to this day; Aécio Neves, whose conduct as a politician speaks for itself; and the former coup-installed president Michel Temer, who left office with a 93% negative approval rating, the worst rating ever achieved by a Brazilian president.

However, incredibly, Temer's irrelevant opinions are still heard and taken seriously by the mainstream press, as if he were someone important in national politics.

The Chamber, presided over by the spineless Hugo Motta, is heading towards another embarrassing situation. Two of the most influential senators, who already played an important role in rejecting the "PEC da Bandidagem" (Amendment to the Constitution regarding criminal activity), Renan Calheiros (MDB) and Oto Alencar (PSD), have already warned that, if the "PEC da Dosimetria" (Amendment to the Constitution regarding sentencing) is approved by the deputies, they intend to actively work for its defeat in the Senate.

However, if things go wrong and the Senate also approves the change in sentencing guidelines for those convicted of attempting to violate the Constitution, a warning is in order: popular dissatisfaction will once again be evident in the streets.

Let's remember that the demonstrations on Sunday, September 21st, also had the fight against amnesty as their main objective.

Furthermore, the Supreme Federal Court, if challenged, will not accept being overruled in its sovereign decision, which has broad constitutional backing.

While Paulinho da Força continues to defend, with the airs of Rui Barbosa, the constitutionality of the proposal and repeats the fallacy of its importance for the "pacification of the country," a popular, parliamentary, and legal stronghold is preparing to contain yet another attack against the democratic regime.
