With Bolsonaro and without Carnival, Brazil stops generating jobs and income.
"Carnival is not just about partying. More than just exciting crowds, it is also responsible for boosting the economy and generating thousands of jobs throughout the country."
Is there a more beautiful, colorful, and diverse celebration than Carnival? If there is, I don't know of it. One of the highlights of Brazilian culture, this festive period brings thousands of revelers to the streets every year. In normal times, the most enthusiastic would be eagerly preparing their costumes, already ready to party.
Some love it, some hate it. There are also those who enjoy it simply for the days off from their daily grind. Love and hate aside, it's important to remember that Carnival isn't just about revelry. More than just exciting crowds, it's also responsible for boosting the economy and generating thousands of jobs across the country. Whether in the large Carnival parades broadcast on TV or in the street parties throughout Brazil, these events mean a chance for many to put food on the table.
But this is not a normal year. Unfortunately, we had to deal with Covid-19 and Bolsonaro – which, in itself, is already harmful to the people. The combination of these two factors resulted in the cancellation of festivities in several cities. Few regions maintained the celebrations. This is because, without proper government action against the virus, Covid contagion remains high, and holding events could put the lives of thousands of people at risk.
It is estimated that, without Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador—cities with the biggest Carnival celebrations—will lose R$ 10 billion in revenue. Furthermore, thousands of jobs in the tourism sector will not be created. To give an idea of the impact of the country's biggest popular event, in 2020 alone, approximately 25 temporary jobs were created. This doesn't even include the people who already work year-round to make the festivities happen. A real boost to the country's economy!
But with Bolsonaro, none of that will happen. With a government based on fake news and belated—and feeble—actions, Bolsonaro allowed the virus to gain strength and be extremely cruel to the Brazilian people. Even when vaccines became available, there were no efforts to purchase and distribute them quickly and accurately. As a consequence of this negligent action, thousands of lives were lost. If the pain of losing a loved one wasn't enough, the unemployment rate increased considerably and the economy suffered a sharp decline, leaving the country in the abyss.
The absence of public policies to support cultural and tourism workers has further aggravated the situation without Carnival. Even the Emergency Aid, which supported the unemployed and self-employed at the beginning of the pandemic, was canceled. Today, what we see is a country without Carnival, without jobs, and without direction.
But we will change the course of Brazil! Our wish is that, in 2023, we will once again celebrate Carnival in every corner of the country. That we will occupy the streets, dance, and shout! A loud shout. A shout of freedom and certainty that we have rid ourselves of two viruses: the one that decimated lives and the one that occupies the presidency. We will celebrate life, the dawn, and a new Brazil with jobs and dignity for everyone, and above all, without Bolsonaro!
