Bolsonaro provoked the biggest crisis in the history of Globo Organizations.

"They fired a lot of people," says the president of ABI.

In an interview on the program "Cesar-fogo" on October 24th, broadcast on Fridays at 9:00 PM on TV 247 and available on the TV 247 website, the president of ABI, Octávio Costa, drew a parallel between the military government and the Bolsonaro government regarding their relations with the press.

"Correio da Manhã didn't end because of incompetence. They arrested the owner, Niomar Muniz Sodré, a warrior woman, she was arrested in 1968 and everything, and in the end the military financially crippled the newspaper. There's an internal document from the SNI (National Information Service), headed by General Octávio Medeiros, in which he orders that no state-owned company advertise in Correio da Manhã. This document was found by Elio Gaspari."

"More or less like what Jair Bolsonaro did with Folha?"

“Bolsonaro did what he did to Folha and O Globo. O Globo and TV Globo used to grab almost 70% of the official advertising. Because the newspaper's circulation and TV audience were taken into account. And Bolsonaro came in, threw that criterion out the window, started giving official funds to his cronies, that is, TV Record, Jovem Pan, and kept strangling them… You know that was the biggest crisis in the history of the Globo Organizations!? Because it was the end of that official advertising. They fired a lot of people! At Globo, at TV Globo, at Globo News, because they had to adapt to that. Almost four years without official advertising. They had to adapt. There was private advertising, but it wasn't enough. Private advertising also fell a lot and today, really, you open the printed newspaper… I'm impressed… you open Globo… (flips through Globo) the ads are all from the company… the events… there are no paid ads.”

"In São Paulo, newsstands receive one Globo, two... there's no branch office in São Paulo, no subscription service in São Paulo"...

"CAOA used to place six or eight pages of ads in Globo and Folha, but that doesn't happen anymore. Official advertising is vital. BNDES, Caixa, Banco do Brasil, Petrobras. It's fundamental."
