Is Bolsonaro preparing a military coup?
"Bolsonaro's political isolation has fueled his desire for a coup; it's contradictory, but it has a cruel logic that could work. Besides the virus, the vermin attacks a vacuum of political action," writes columnist Arnóbio Rocha. "The coup is in the streets, it will materialize, amidst the coffins and ICUs of Brazil."
Another impeachable offense by Bolsonaro occurred today, April 19th. He went to the Army Headquarters and defended the AI-5 (Institutional Act No. 04), which is against democracy, amidst a gathering of supporters who called for a demonstration against Congress and the Supreme Court on Army Day.
Bolsonaro wants to break down democracy by any means necessary. He has lost all dialogue with the other branches of government, the legislative and judicial branches, as well as with governors and mayors.
Politically cornered, Bolsonaro resorts to a classic coup, presenting himself as the savior of the nation against the politicians who are hindering his mandate.
The economic platform is a fraud, claiming the economy was booming, that the pandemic was a way to undermine him, that there are ulterior motives behind social isolation. They claim this will lead to public spending and he won't take responsibility for the economic downturn, and that the blame lies with mayors and governors.
It's a shallow, easy, and direct discourse, simple to assimilate, without any counterpoint to it.
What is the basis of support for a coup attempt, to shut down and corner the institutions?
In the armed forces, apparently, he only has the support of part of the army, which explains so many generals in ministries and key positions in the Republic; it's almost a "purchase" of support, surrounding himself with generals, none of whom have democratic leanings.
The politicians and public figures who support him are the camp followers of the dictatorship who despise democracy, mediocre people with some media support, like Moro, a judge who tore up the constitution and the laws.
On the other hand, Bolsonaro and his family feed a horde of fascists/scoundrels and insane people on the internet, social media, the old men with the ducks from Paulista Avenue, Leblon, Aldeota, Asa Sul, etc.
The motorcades and demonstrations give real life to the delusion, claiming to combat the so-called "secret plan" of Maia, Dória, and the Supreme Court. Hatred for the PT fuels the paranoia of this scum.
His popularity figures are confusing, but they guarantee his survival and allow him to manipulate a portion of the population in support of the coup.
Bolsonaro and his entourage have calculated that if they delay the coup for too long, they won't have the strength to execute the risky maneuver.
All limits of responsibility have been exceeded; no one, institutionally, puts a stop to it. This is a huge advantage; it acts with a free hand and sets the agenda for the debate, completely detached from reality.
All democratic and responsible forces in the country, across all political stripes, from right to left, including the center, are concerned about the social tragedy of a pandemic that could spiral out of control.
Bolsonaro's political isolation has fueled his desire for a coup; it's contradictory, but it has a cruel logic that could work, because in addition to the virus, the worm attacks a vacuum of political action.
A brake must be found, or rather, the attempt must be abandoned; the coup is in the streets, it will materialize amidst the coffins and ICUs of Brazil.
