Amnesty advances, driven by the scum of the National Congress.

The mobilization of democrats in the streets and on social media is essential to stop the amnesty.

"Amnesty is an irresponsible affront to the Constitution." The headline doesn't come from any alternative media outlet, but rather from an editorial by a conservative and reactionary writer. The Globe, posted in the online edition on the afternoon of this Wednesday (3).

As the date for the announcement of Bolsonaro's conviction approaches, scheduled for next Friday, efforts are gaining momentum in the Chamber of Deputies, especially, but also in the Senate, to degrade the Judiciary, violate the Constitution, and free the leaders of the criminal organization responsible for the coup against our democratic regime from prison.

The illegal proposal, born in the sewers of the National Congress, is now advancing as if it were a legitimate parliamentary initiative, like any other. Today, the right-wing extremists, the originators of the proposal, already have the support of broad sectors of the Centrão, the group fattened on billions in amendments. During their departure from the government (where, strictly speaking, they never really were), which occurred a few days ago, leaders of the PP and Republicanos parties spoke openly about their adherence to the amnesty proposal.

In turn, true to his role as a spineless politician, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Hugo Motta, warned that he will not resist pressure to include topics such as amnesty on the agenda and that everything will depend on the leaders' meeting, blah, blah, blah. A mere smokescreen to hide his flirtation with impunity for those who tried to destroy democracy.

The project moves forward by bringing together under the same umbrella the most despicable elements in the federal legislature, from fascists to crooks, including scoundrels and cowards.

The movement has two factions. One, formed by parliamentarians from the PL and the Novo Party, the far-right extremists who applaud the attempted coup of January 8, 2023, and want a broad, general, and unrestricted amnesty, even reversing Bolsonaro's ineligibility; and another, of right-wing parliamentarians who love being treated as members of the Centrão (center bloc), who indicate that they will try to formulate a more "palatable" project for society.

(Parenthetically: In recent hours, the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, signaled that he intends to present a bill mitigating the penalties for those who, according to him, acted as "pawns," but leaving out the leaders, organizers, and financiers of the coup attempt. As expected, the idea was poorly received by the far right and a large part of the Centrão [center-right bloc].)

The promise by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, to pardon Bolsonaro if he is elected president of the Republic (a midwinter night's dream), reveals what is behind the pro-amnesty conspiracy.

Since Bolsonaro is seen by the establishment as a burnt-out match, Tarcísio, seeking the support of the former president and his followers, is offering a pardon. On the other hand, among deputies and senators, the conviction of the coup plotters is seen as a factor capable of further increasing Lula's chances in the 2026 election. Hence, the amnesty is seen as an attempt to scramble the game and create obstacles for Lula's easy path to a fourth term.

Although the Supreme Court will react with all its institutional weight to the unconstitutional attack, the mobilization of democrats in the streets and on social media is essential to stop the amnesty.

In other words: only ignorance and bad faith can lead a person to defend amnesty for the coup plotters using as an argument a comparison with the amnesty of those who fought against the military dictatorship. As if it were possible to compare those who confront a dictatorship with those who try to establish one. Another thing: the brave resisters of the authoritarian regime that began in 1964 were kidnapped, imprisoned, served sentences, or endured exile. Many suffered torture and were murdered. Meanwhile, today's coup-plotting gang hasn't even been convicted yet and is already clamoring for amnesty. Bunch of cowards.
