247 with Reuters - Thousands of Peruvians, many of them from the mining regions in the south of the country, arrived in the capital Lima on Thursday for a Large planned demonstration against the government and Congress., motivated by more than 50 deaths linked to protests since last month.

A Reuters report highlights that many people in the poorest rural areas want to express their anger against Lima's political elite and regarding inequality and rising prices in the country, testing the democratic institutions of the copper-rich Andean nation.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the swift calling of new elections, a renewal of Congress, and a new Constitution to replace the current one, which has a neoliberal character and dates back to the time of dictator Alberto Fujimori in the 1990s.

By bus and on foot, thousands traveled to the capital carrying flags and banners criticizing the government and police for the deaths of protesters in the southern cities of Ayacucho and Juliaca, many demanding Boluarte's resignation.

"We want Dina Boluarte to resign," said Julio Saldivar, a protester from Ayacucho, where dozens of people died in December.

Protesters are planning a protest known as the "Taking of Lima" this Thursday, and there are fears that the government will deploy thousands of police officers in response. There were even clashes on Wednesday night (18).
