Sputnik and 247 - Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced on Wednesday (7) the dissolution of Congress, the establishment of an "exceptional emergency government" and the calling of new legislative elections.

In the message, delivered via a televised address, Castillo stated that he had declared a state of emergency and imposed a nationwide curfew in order to establish a "government of exception to restore the rule of law and democracy." "The following measures are being taken: to temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and to establish an exceptional government of emergency," he said.

According to the President of Peru, the justice system will be "reorganized," including the Judiciary, the Public Prosecutor's Office, the National Board of Justice, and the Constitutional Court.

The Peruvian Congress approved last week the opening of an impeachment process on the grounds that the country's president lacks the "moral capacity" to hold office. "This is the third formal attempt to oust the leftist leader since he took office in 2021."

Pedro Castillo faces this Wednesday (7) a new vacancy motion driven by opposition deputies - the third since he took power in July 2021. The request alleges that Castillo would not have the moral capacity to exercise the Presidency due to the ongoing investigations against him.

Peru's Constitution allows the president to dissolve Congress. The last time this provision was invoked was in 2019, during the administration of Martín Vizcarra, who was also facing a political crisis.
