Petro calls for a Celac meeting: "If we are not welcome in the North, the South must unite."
The meeting is scheduled to take place on January 31st.
247 - The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has called a meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to discuss the migration crisis.
According to Petro, the CELAC meeting will take place on January 30th and "will be an opportunity to address strategic issues for the region, such as cooperation on migration issues, the protection of human rights, and the strengthening of relations between member countries."
"As president of CELAC this year, I request that the current president of CELAC, Iris Xiomara Castro (President of Honduras), convene an extraordinary assembly of presidents," Petro wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
He added: "If we are not welcome in the North, the South must unite."
In the same statement, Petro informed that he "made the presidential plane available to facilitate the dignified return of his compatriots," refusing the United States military flight.
Faced with the Colombian government's refusal, President Donald Trump decided to retaliate with a series of sanctions against the country.
