Petro condemns US sanctions against Moraes and says the measure violates the American Convention on Human Rights.
The Colombian president also called upon the "best legal experts in Latin America" to prepare a response to the measure.
247 - Colombian President Gustavo Petro reacted on Wednesday (30) to the decision by Donald Trump's government to apply sanctions to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), based on the Magnitsky Act — American legislation used to punish foreigners accused of corruption or human rights violations.
In a post on the social network X, Petro stated that the sanctions violate the American Convention on Human Rights. The Colombian president also called on the "best jurists in Latin America" to prepare a response to the measure. "Does the US government want to unilaterally break [the convention]?", he questioned.
“The sanctions imposed on Judge Alexandre de Moraes violate the American Convention on Human Rights. I invite the best jurists in Latin America to draft the corresponding complaint. The United States, Colombia, and most nations in the Americas have committed to signing the American Convention on Human Rights. Does the US government want to unilaterally break it?” he wrote.
