Maria does not officially represent the Venezuelan government, given that she was appointed by the self-proclaimed "president" of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, who lacks the legitimacy to hold the leadership of the country.
Journalist Mônica Bergamo, from Folha de S. Paulo, commented on the appearance of the fake ambassador in Bolsonaro's video: "Maria Teresa Belandria, whom the Bolsonaro government considers the 'ambassador' of Venezuela and who is helping the president minimize the damage from 'a tense atmosphere arose,' is not a diplomat from the neighboring country. She is, in fact, a lawyer linked to Juan Guaidó, the self-proclaimed 'president' of Venezuela."
