André Richter - Agência Brasil - Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes denied on Tuesday (25) that the Court is condemning "old ladies with the Bible in their hands" for the coup attempts of January 8, 2023. The term is used by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro to refer to the sentences handed down by the Court.

The statement was made during the hearing of preliminary issues raised by the defense of eight defendants accused of plotting a coup, including the former president and General Braga Netto.

This Tuesday, the Supreme Court will decide whether to accept the complaint filed in February by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) against the so-called crucial core of the plot.

During the session, Moraes said that a "false narrative" had been created to claim that the Court was condemning "old ladies with Bibles in their hands, who were supposedly strolling on a sunny Sunday."

The rapporteur for the case in the First Chamber presented data showing that, of the 497 convictions for the coup attempts of January 8, 2023, 454 are of people aged 59 or younger. There were 36 convictions between the ages of 60 and 69, and seven convictions between the ages of 70 and 75.

"This narrative was created and is repeated through fraudulent news on social media, fake news, claiming that only women, and elderly women [who were convicted]," the minister stated.

The trial continues for analysis of preliminary issues. Following that, the justices will decide whether Bolsonaro and the other accused will become defendants.
