Mexico and Chile ask the International Criminal Court to investigate "probable" war crimes committed in Gaza.
Both countries warned of alarming levels of violence against civilians in Gaza.
247 The governments of Mexico and Chile jointly issued a document to the International Criminal Court (ICC) requesting that the institution investigate "the likely commission of crimes" in the Gaza Strip, which has been the target of Israeli bombings.
In the document sent to the ICC, authorities from Mexico and Chile, presided over by Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Gabriel Boric, stated that there is "growing concern about the escalation of violence, especially against civilian targets" in the Gaza Strip, which has been the target of Israeli bombings since October 7th.
"Added to this is the virtually total collapse of Palestine's national justice infrastructure, meaning it would be unable to investigate or prosecute any crimes committed on its territory," the text continued.
The International Criminal Court is different from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The ICC tries individuals, while the ICJ tries states. The ICJ presented accusations of genocide brought by South Africa against the State of Israel, which has Benjamin Netanyahu as its prime minister.
According to the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, more than 24,7 Palestinians have died in the territory since October 7th as a result of Israeli attacks. Deaths, destruction of homes and hospitals, and children amputated without anesthesia are some of the crimes committed by the Israeli government in the genocide of the Palestinian people.
