Mercosur inaugurates space in honor of Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães.
A ceremony in Montevideo celebrated the diplomatic legacy of the former Secretary-General of Itamaraty and a symbol of Latin American integration.
247 - Mercosur inaugurated this Monday (6), at its headquarters in Montevideo, Uruguay, a space in homage to Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, one of the main formulators of regional integration policy in recent decades. The diplomat, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 84, was one of the most influential voices in the defense of national sovereignty and cooperation between South American countries.
According to information published by Folha de S.Paulo, the ceremony was attended by important representatives of the bloc and Brazilian politics, including the president of the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur), Humberto Costa, and Ambassador Antonio Simões, Brazil's permanent representative to Mercosur. Federal deputy Bohn Gass (PT-RS) and Maria Maia, Guimarães' widow, also participated.
A legacy focused on regional integration.
Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães was Secretary-General of Itamaraty (Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs) during the first two terms of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and played a strategic role in building a foreign policy aimed at strengthening Mercosur and Latin American integration. In 2011, he assumed the position of High Representative of Brazil to the bloc, expanding his influence in negotiations and the formulation of regional policies.
Recognized for his firm stance in defending national interests, Guimarães stood out as one of the most respected intellectuals in contemporary Brazilian diplomacy. His critical view of Latin America's economic dependence and his advocacy for integration based on sovereignty and autonomous development influenced generations of diplomats and foreign policy makers.
The creation of the space in his honor symbolizes the recognition, by the Mercosur countries, of a career dedicated to consolidating the bloc as a strategic political and economic project for the region. The ceremony was described by those present as a gesture of gratitude for Guimarães' contribution to strengthening relations between South American countries.
The new space at Mercosur headquarters in Montevideo will house documents, photos, and objects related to the ambassador's career, reinforcing his memory as a central figure in Brazilian and Latin American diplomacy.
