Latin Press - With a visit to Jamaica this Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio begins another international trip, this time focused on the Caribbean region, which also includes stops in Guyana and Suriname.

The Secretary of State will meet at the highest levels with leaders from the region to discuss security, economic development, and ties with this geographic area.

The visit comes at a time when leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are questioning Washington's policies toward Cuba and the recent announcement of visa restrictions for officials associated with the island's medical missions, which they consider vital to the region's health systems.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce reminded reporters the previous day that Rubio will be making his second trip to the region, just two months after President Donald Trump's inauguration.

"On Wednesday and Thursday, he will travel to Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname. During his stay in Jamaica, the Secretary will also hold bilateral meetings with the Heads of State of Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti," he emphasized.

Rubio will hold talks this Wednesday (26) with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and will also meet with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, who will travel to Kingston to represent the CARICOM group of 15 countries.

He will also hold talks with the newly appointed Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Stuart Young, and the head of Haiti's Presidential Transitional Council, Fritz Alphonse Jean.

Mauricio Claver-Carone, the State Department's special envoy for Latin America, told reporters that Rubio's trip will serve as a "historic opportunity to ensure energy security in the Caribbean."

The Caribbean Community is composed of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
