Gustavo Petro: 'Our compatriots will arrive in Colombia without handcuffs'
'Dignity for the deportee will be applied to all countries that send deportations to us,' stated the leader of the South American country.
247 - Colombian President Gustavo Petro highlighted on Monday (27) the importance of Colombians deported from the United States being treated with due respect on their way back to South America.
“In the morning, our compatriots will arrive on Colombian territory. Our aviation will bring them, and they will arrive without being handcuffed. This provision—dignity for the deportee—will be applied to all countries that send us deportations and is now supported by the UN,” Petro wrote on the social network X.
A member of the center-left Colombia Humana party, the South American country's leader made the comment after 88 Brazilians deported from the US arrived in Manaus (AM) in handcuffs. President Donald Trump (Republican Party), of the far-right in the United States, has been the target of numerous protests from political leaders and activists in the progressive field globally.
Colombia is expected to receive around 160 deportees. Official estimates indicate that the US has between 45 million and 51 million immigrants. The measures announced by US President Donald Trump are expected to affect approximately 10 million to 15 million people.
