247 - The United States on Wednesday (22) designated opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as “legitimate president,” two days after Donald Trump’s inauguration, confirming the position of his predecessor, Joe Biden. Gonzalez was defeated in the presidential elections of July 28 last year.

Washington had already recognized the victory of the opposition to Nicolás Maduro in the Venezuelan presidential elections, and Maduro took office on January 10.

The new U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, met on Wednesday with "the legitimate president of Venezuela, Edmundo Gonzalez, and the opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado," announced State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.

"The Secretary of State praised the courage of the Venezuelan people in the face of the repression carried out by Nicolás Maduro and his cronies," the spokesman said in a statement.
