The former president was one of the central figures in the redemocratization of Uruguay.

Sanguinetti governed Uruguay for two terms. In his first term, from 1985 to 1990, he was responsible for ending a 12-year cycle of authoritarian governments. He later returned to the position between 1995 and 2000.
The Uruguayan's admission as a corresponding member of the ABL was suggested by the Academy's president, journalist Merval Pereira.
