Dialogue between political parties in Chile is progressing toward drafting a new Constitution.
Five points were agreed upon: continuity in the process, that the Constitution be drafted by an elected body with the support of experts, parity, and approval by plebiscite.
RNA - The president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, Raúl Soto, reported this Monday (12), that five points were agreed during the second meeting of negotiations for the drafting of a new Constitution, after the rejection of the project approved by the constitutional convention by 61,86% of the votes.
First, the agreement establishes that it is necessary to "continue with the process of building a new Constitution," although the Republican Party did not join, believing that a new constitutional process should not be initiated.
As second and third points, the president explained that it was agreed that the new Constitution should be drafted by a "100% elected body" composed of people "elected by the citizens," and that it should have the participation and support of a committee of experts.
In the fourth item, Soto emphasized that gender parity was discussed for the elected body. "Parity between men and women, gender parity, is something that is here to stay and on which no political sector is willing to back down," he said.
Finally, he highlighted that it was agreed, in a "broad and transversal" manner, that the process of drafting a new Constitution should conclude with a plebiscite with mandatory voting.
He then explained that the operating rules and design of the project "will be discussed later at a negotiating table" that will be formed and discussed next Thursday.
For her part, the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Ana Lya Uriarte, stressed that "the government is very hopeful that this dialogue will lead to a new Constitution" and thus be able to "end the uncertainty that is present among many Chilean men and women".
Similarly, he praised the agreements reached and highlighted that the government "is satisfied with the outcome of today's dialogue."
