US renews attacks on suspected Venezuelan "narcoterrorists" in the Caribbean Sea (video)
President Donald Trump stated that the attacked vessel was involved in "narcotics trafficking in the area of responsibility of the U.S. Southern Command."
247 US President Donald Trump stated that the country carried out an attack against a drug trafficking vessel in international waters, resulting in the death of three people on board.
The action increases tensions with Venezuela because the United States has deployed more than 4.000 troops to the Caribbean region, near the Venezuelan coast. The Trump administration accuses Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of narcoterrorism and has also announced a reward of up to US$50 million (approximately R$270 million) for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
"At my direction, the Secretary of War authorized a lethal kinetic strike against a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization engaged in narcotics trafficking in the area of responsibility of U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM)," Trump declared in a social media post Friday night regarding the latest attack.
"Intelligence confirmed that the vessel was transporting illicit narcotics and was following a known drug trafficking route, on its way to poison Americans."
