Opera Mundi - The United States Department of Justice ordered on Wednesday (05/04) the arrest of former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo to proceed with his extradition to Peru, where he will face corruption charges during his term (2001-2006).

Federal Judge Thomas Hixson made the decision after the California Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Toledo's request to suspend his repatriation, which had been approved by the same judge in 2021.

The court decision indicates that Toledo "will go to an appropriate prison and remain there until he is handed over to Peruvian authorities." The US court revoked his parole and ordered that the defendant be taken into custody next Friday (April 7).

The accusation against former president Toledo is that he received bribes in exchange for granting the concession of the Southern Interoceanic Highway to the Odebrecht company during his term. The Peruvian politician has been a fugitive from Peruvian justice in the United States since 2017.

Judge Hixson has not yet resolved the case at first instance. In 2021, he approved Toledo's extradition to Peru, but that decision had to be authorized by the United States government, which gave it the green light last February.

U.S. Attorney for the California region, Ismail Ramsey, attached a document to the request warning that the former president's defense will file a new appeal, but announced that the Attorney's Office also plans to oppose this claim.
