Brazilian organizations condemn US action against Venezuelan immigrants.
The Brazilian Association of Judicial Branches (ABDJ) and the Brazilian Center for Peace and Assistance to Venezuelans (Cebrapaz) have spoken out against the deportation of Venezuelans to El Salvador.
The Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD) and the Brazilian Center for Solidarity with Peoples and Struggle for Peace (Cebrapaz) denounced this Tuesday (25) that the United States used the Foreign Enemy Law to kidnap and deport Venezuelan immigrants, without offering them a trial or legal defense.
"This incident has generated alarm following the kidnapping of 238 Venezuelans, who were illegally sent to prisons in El Salvador on unfounded charges, in an agreement between the US government and the government of Nayib Bukele," ABJD said in a statement.
"The actions of the US government, in light of the facts, can be classified as kidnapping and human trafficking," says the ABDJ statement.
In turn, the Cebrapaz statement expresses "deep solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of the injustices and mistreatment suffered by Venezuelan immigrants in the United States."
“The government of President Donald Trump deported hundreds of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador, to be incarcerated in a maximum-security prison, under false accusations and resorting to brutal methods. The deportation order was issued based on the invocation of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, which authorizes the government to detain and expel, in times of war, individuals who threaten the security of the country, without the need to guarantee due process of law to those affected. The arbitrariness is evident because the arrest and deportation of these migrants does not meet any of the criteria established in the aforementioned law,” emphasizes Cebrapaz.
