US Embassy in Colombia suspends visa issuance following Petro's decision on deportations.
The Colombian president has banned the entry of American planes carrying deportees.
247 - The United States Embassy in Colombia announced this Sunday (26) that it will stop issuing visas in response to the decision by Colombian President Gustavo Petro to refuse the arrival of flights with deportees in the country. The information is from Eixo Político.
"The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I prohibit the entry of U.S. planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory. The U.S. must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them," Petro announced on his social media this Sunday.
The decision comes at a time of growing regional tension, with other countries also reacting to US deportation practices. In Brazil, a recent case involving the arrival of 88 deported Brazilians in conditions considered degrading generated strong repercussions.
Petro responds - Gustavo Petro reiterated his criticism of the United States' immigration policy. He emphasized that there are Americans in an irregular immigration situation in Colombia. "There are 15.660 Americans residing in Colombia illegally. They should contact our immigration service to regularize their situation," he said.
He also argued that migrants should receive dignified treatment. "First and foremost is the dignity of Colombia and Latin America. Migrants are human beings and subjects of rights, and as such, they must be treated accordingly," he concluded.
