In Buenos Aires, Lula and Nobel Peace Prize laureate call for the release of Cristina Kirchner, a target of lawfare.
The gesture by Lula and activist Adolfo Perez Esquivel represents a historic initiative in South America.
247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended this Thursday (3) the importance of his meeting with Argentine human rights activist Adolfo Perez Esquivel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980.
In Buenos Aires, the two leaders called for the release of former Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, who has been under house arrest in the capital since June 17 after being a victim of lawfare. The Peronist was sentenced to six years in prison for corruption in a controversial judicial process, questioned by activists and politicians from the Argentine progressive camp, who denounce a lack of evidence.
Lula and Esquivel's gesture represents a historic initiative in South America. In Brazil, the current president was a victim of lawfare in Operation Lava Jato, being convicted without evidence in the Guarujá (SP) triplex case and subsequently removed from the 2018 election. The reason was the conviction determined by the then-biased former judge Sergio Moro. In 2021, the Supreme Federal Court declared the former magistrate biased and restored Lula's political rights.
“He told me about the struggles in Argentina, the defense of our comrade Cristina Kirchner (@CFKArgentina), and I was able to share a little about what we have been facing in Brazil. We remain united in the commitment we made in our lives to build a more just and equitable world,” Lula wrote on the social network X when commenting on the meeting with the activist.
“I was happy to meet my friend and colleague Adolfo Perez Esquivel (@PrensaPEsquivel), this Thursday afternoon (3), in Buenos Aires. We talked about the challenges facing defenders of democracy in these turbulent times we are experiencing in international geopolitics, with the rise of the far-right,” added the president.
The Argentinian activist also spoke out. “Today we met with our brother and comrade @LulaOficial to say #FreeCristina! The legal war continues in the region, destroying our democracies. The lies against Lula crumbled in Brazil and will continue to crumble here. Cristina is innocent. Fight and come back…”.
