Attack against Cristina is a warning about the actions of the far-right throughout Latin America, says Celso Amorim.

The far-right represents a serious risk for all of Latin America, according to the former foreign minister.

247 - In interview with capital letterFormer Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said that the far-right "doesn't measure its power" and feels increasingly encouraged to resort to violent acts against political opponents.

"The far right has always been violent, but now it's endorsed even by people in positions of authority, people with a lot of influence," the former chancellor assesses. "I think this legitimizes their actions. They say they don't know if he [Montiel, the attacker] was with someone or alone, but it's always with someone. Even if he's alone, he represents a sentiment expressed and legitimized by others."

He mentioned important victories by progressive candidates in Latin America, such as Gabriel Boric in Chile and Gustavo Petro in Colombia, two countries that turned to the left after the failure of the neoliberal agenda. Given this, according to Amorim, the risk is that the right, unable to come to power through the ballot box, will resort to "extreme means." The former minister also sees a movement in Argentina legitimizing violence, including against Cristina.
