Agency Brazil - The price of potatoes and onions fell in the main Supply Centers (Ceasas) in the country, in the month of July. This is shown in the 8th Bulletin of the Brazilian Program for the Modernization of the Fruit and Vegetable Market (Prohort), released this Thursday (21) by the National Supply Company (Conab).

In the case of potatoes, the price drop occurred for the second consecutive month in the main wholesale markets. The reduction reached 31,61% on average across the 11 wholesale markets analyzed by the National Supply Company (Conab).

According to Conab, the lower prices are explained by the abundant supply of the product in the markets.

"The greater supply of onions on the market also influenced the lower prices. July's weighted average prices were 25,57% lower than in June. Compared to the same period in 2024, prices are almost 60% lower than those recorded the previous year," the survey detailed.

However, the price variation for tomatoes and carrots was not uniform across the wholesale markets analyzed.

"In the case of tomatoes, Ceasa in Paraná recorded a 16,68% drop, while in Santa Catarina, a 4,68% increase was recorded. Even so, Conab recorded a 5,68% drop in the weighted average price."

In the case of lettuce, the weighted average of prices showed an increase of 9,93%, with the largest increase recorded at Ceasa in Paraná.

"However, this upward trend was not unanimous. Since leafy greens production tends to be close to consumer centers, each wholesale market reacts according to the intensity of supply, quality, and demand," the company reported.

Fruits

Orange prices fell by 9,8% in the weighted average of quotations observed by Conab. The reduction is due to lower demand because of the school holiday period, competition with the poncã tangerine, and colder weather.

"A similar scenario was observed for apples. Lower temperatures and the student break also impacted apple sales prices, which saw a slight 1,92% reduction in the weighted average," Conab reported.

Watermelon demand fell due to colder weather, despite increased production in Goiás and Tocantins. The weighted average sales value of this product increased by 3,92%.

Bananas and papayas also saw price increases. In the case of the weighted average of prices at wholesale markets for bananas, the increase was 10,48%, due to a lower supply of the dwarf variety, which, according to the report, showed a "reduction in the volume of product shipments from the main producing regions, a common situation in winter." The increase in papayas reached 21,65% on average. This increase is attributed to weather conditions, according to the survey.

“While on the one hand low temperatures influence lower demand, on the other hand the cold weather also impacts a lower supply of the product,” he explained.
