(Reuters)- The soybean harvest process for the 2023/24 crop in Brazil reached 38% of the total cultivated area this week, still ahead of the historical average and also of the same period last year, according to a survey by Pátria AgroNegócios.

In 2023, producers had harvested 34,51% of the area, while the five-year average for the period is 35,95%, after some crops had their cycle brought forward due to drought. However, in 2022, the harvest was more advanced, at 44,46%, according to the consultancy.

"The weekly progress of fieldwork covered only 7,3% of the national area, the worst progress for the period since 2009. Productivity reports are still mixed. In Paraná, results are disappointing," said Matheus Pereira, director of Pátria.

According to Pereira, rainfall in some areas and crops that are not ready for harvest, following late planting, explain this week's index.

"In Goiás and Minas Gerais, a more consistent scenario has been observed. In Mato Grosso, variability is still noticeable, with poor plots alongside average results."
